Es la trucha con mayor distribución en la patagonia, merced a su alta capacidad de adaptación a distintas condiciones ambientales.

Existe incluso una variedad en el río Santa Cruz que ha desarrollado una anadromía muy particular, haciendo varias migraciones a lo Largo de su vida al mar con fines de alimentación, alcanzando portes muy interesantes.

La trucha arco iris se distingue de los demás salmónidos por la ancha banda purpúrea que tiene en cada uno de sus flancos, desde el opérculo hasta la cola. Su espalda es verde oliva y sus lados plateados, tornándose blanca en el vientre. Presenta manchas negras redondeadas en casi todo el cuerpo, principalmente en el dorso.

Las aletas dorsales y caudal están profusamente moteadas. La aleta anal puede presentar el borde externo blanco en las truchas que frecuentan los arroyos.

Las truchas que viven en los lagos, especialmente próximos a glaciares toman un color más oscuro en el dorso, los flancos plateados y el vientre blanco. Su dieta es muy variada, pero se alimenta principalmente de invertebrados.

There is a variety in the Santa Cruz river which has developed a very particular anadromous habit, it performs several migrations to the ocean during its life span in order to feed and it grows significantly in size.

The rainbow trout can be distinguished from the other salmonids by the wide purple stripe along each side, from the operculum to the tail.

Its back is of a deep olive green and its sides are silver with a white belly.

It has rounded black spots throughout its body specially on its back. The dorsal and caudal fins are deeply mottled. The anal fin can have a white external edge in those trout that are found in streams. The trout that live in streams, especially those close to glaciers; have darker backs, their sides silver and a white belly. Their diet is quite varied but it feeds mainly on invertebrates.
